Took a 7ish hour red eye from Atlanta to Paris (CDG) on Tuesday. Had 5 hour layover. Ate a pain au chocolate because I can’t be in any part of Paris without one.
Flew another 8 hours to Nairobi (NBO), landing around 8pm Wednesday. IVHQ, the volunteer organization, arranged ground transport for myself and another volunteer that was on the same flight. It was probably a 20 minute ride to the volunteer house in Jamhuri.
The host moms got us settled in our rooms. There are four in the house, each outfitted with two bunk beds. Three shared bathrooms (with running water because I know y’all are wondering).
Ugali – maize porridge. I liken it to cold stone ground grits but with a finer texture.
Rice and green peas
Sautéed mix of kale and spinach
Lentils (the jam!)
Mandazi – sweet fried dough and hella addictive
