Karen – a suburb of Nairobi. Significantly fewer pedestrians compared to Nairobi. Lots of 4×4 SUVs, manicured lawns and gated houses.
It’s the site of the Karen Blixen house and museum. She’s the Danish author of Out of Africa. In the early 1900s, her home sat on a 6,000 acre coffee farm until it went bankrupt. (Side note from my tour guide: coffee doesn’t grow well in the area because the soil is too acidic. It’s better suited to corn and kale). Karen was advocate for women’s education. I definitely want to visit her museum in Denmark next month.

After my tour, I walked down a quiet street to reach Kazuri beads factory and shop. A fair trade operations, generating jobs and income for local women.

I had lunch at The Talisman. Thai prawns on the left with feta and cilantro samosas on the right. Plus an Aperol spritz. Ended with a rhubarb crumble and ice cream.
