It is on a wall just off the Camp fashion installation. A quiet, singular respite from the volume, color and shuffling congestion of the adjacent exhibit. One white fluorescent bulb. Tilted on a 45-degree angle (I’m guessing) in The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The piece is Diagonal of May 25, 1963 by Dan Flavin. I heard about him through the Piece of Work podcast hosted by Abbi Jacobson. I’ve seen other Flavin pieces in Manhattan and Baltimore but the one below is the most minimal. What is it about light installations? The contrast of bright core and dark parallel shadow? The more frequently I see the lights, the more I come back them.
