Have you ever wanted to crawl into a piece of art? A flattened whisk. The skeleton of a melted broom. Whatever it is, I wanted to be closer to it.

Lever #2 by Martin Puryear is one of the first things you see when entering Generation: A History of Black Abstract Art. I kept circling it and holding myself back. After I left the museum, I couldn’t stop thinking about his work. I read this NYT article from May then searched for museums that currently have his work on display. I want to see more. Now.
He makes imposing art. Geometric and organic shapes that are coming to swallow you up. From photographs, some pieces look so inviting you’re willing to fall into them.
For me, Puryear joins the ranks of Yves Klein, Emma Amos and Carmen Herrera – I’m obsessed.
