Notes and thoughts from day 7, last Monday.

Low 56 F. High 75 F. It’s winter here so Kenyans bundle up in scarves, long sleeves, sweaters and hats. I and other volunteers however are in short sleeves, wishing it was appropriate to wear shorts. This is the first day I wished for air conditioning or a fan. We have neither.

Everyday is surprise. Will there be running water or will I “flush” the toilet with a bucket of water? Mosquito bites or no? Hot water? Probably not. Of course, not all of Kenya is like this but these things have been challenging. The only constant is friendly people and inquiries about what it’s like to live in the U.S.

Spent the day with the women’s group. Monday’s are for lessons about hairdressing. The teacher talked them through roller sets and finger waves. I showed them how I twist my hair and they compared to the hairstyle of a soap opera character. Side note: telenovelas are popular here. Tomorrow I’m supposed to lead a discussion on business and interview etiquette. Yikes
